How Kia’s Auto Hold Works
What is Auto Hold?
Does your foot ever tire from pressing down on the brake at long red lights? Auto Hold is a convenient feature that prevents your car from moving even when you take your foot off of the brake pedal. This function comes in handy when you’re waiting in stop-and-go traffic or in a long drive-thru line. With the Auto Hold function, you can take your foot off the pedal and comfortably wait until you’re ready to resume driving.
How Does Auto Hold Work?
Auto Hold takes advantage of your vehicle’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) to keep pressure on the brakes. It is distinct from the EPB since it works as an extension of the parking brake. Once you take your foot off the brake, all four brakes stay engaged.
If your vehicle’s ABS unit senses any movement, the Auto Hold function will automatically apply more pressure on the brakes to keep your car from rolling. When you press the gas pedal, Auto Hold is canceled and your car is free to move forward again.
How To Use Kia Auto Hold
The Auto Hold feature is available on vehicles such as the Kia Sportage, Carnival, Niro, Sorento, and EV6. To use the Kia Auto Hold button, you must first come to a complete stop. Ensure your door, engine hood, and tailgate are shut and your seat belt is on. Activate Auto Hold by pressing the Auto Hold button on your dash below the Gear Shift.
Auto Hold will illuminate white when in standby mode. In this state, the vehicle is at a stop and Auto Hold is turned on. The white light of standby mode will remain on after you start driving the vehicle.
Auto Hold will turn from white to green when you come to a complete stop and take your foot off of the brake pedal. The green light indicates that Auto Hold is actively engaged.
The yellow light indicates an error with the Auto Hold system. We recommend taking your vehicle to Cowboy Kia or your local Kia dealership to assess the malfunction.
The Auto Hold light will turn completely off when you manually switch the Auto Hold button off or if you manually turn the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) on.
How to Turn Off Auto Hold On Kia
When you press the accelerator, Auto Hold will automatically release so your vehicle can move. To cancel Auto Hold, simply press the Auto Hold switch, and the indicator light will turn off. If your vehicle is stopped and you’d like to turn off Auto Hold, press the Auto Hold switch while pressing the brake pedal.
Can You Drive With Auto Hold On?
You can turn on the Auto Hold feature while driving, and a white light will turn on to let you know Auto Hold is ready to use. The Auto Hold light will turn green when your vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Is Auto Hold Bad For Your Car?
The Auto Hold feature was designed to ensure the safety and optimal performance of your vehicle. While using Auto Hold, you may notice some clicking or whining noises, which are normal sounds and part of the operation of the system.
