What Does Kia Stand For?

Before we bring out the history books, let’s start with a fun fact: what does Kia stand for? Well, in Korean, ‘ki’ means ‘to arise’ and ‘a’ can stand for Asia. Therefore, roughly translated, ‘Kia’ means ‘from Asia!’ Now you have a go-to conversation starter for any time you see a comely Kia rolling down the road. Now, let’s learn more about the history behind these beautiful machines.

When was Kia Founded?

Kyungsung Precision Industry (KPI)—the original name of Kia Motors—was founded in December of 1944. At the time, its primary business was the manufacturing of bicycle parts, steel tubing, and more. In fact, KPI was also the first company to create an indigenous Korean bicycle; in other words, they were the first Korean manufacturer to locally produce a bike in Korea. ‘Kia,’ as we’ve come to know it, first emerged in 1952 when the company changed its name to ‘Kia Industries.’

When Were Kia Cars First Created?

In 1957, Kia Industries began producing motorcycles and trucks which were licensed to Mazda. Then, in 1973, Kia opened its first plant for manufacturing its own vehicles. One year later, they began developing their very first vehicle: the Brisa 1.0. As time went on, Kia would eventually hit the brakes on its own manufacturing and instead opt to collaborate with other manufacturers from around the world, including Fiat, Ford, and many more.

When Did Kia Come to America?

Then, in 1992, Kia landed in America as ‘Kia Motors America.’ Since selling its first cars more than 30 years ago, the company has since gone on to open hundreds of dealerships all across the United States.
