Kia Minivans Are Not What They Used To Be

Following the successful launch of the upgraded Sorento and the new Telluride SUVs, Kia focuses its transformative energy on one of the most unfairly criticized market sectors: the family-friendly minivan.

The Carnival is here, offering a unique alternative to popular minivan models like the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica.

Kia has branded the innovation as a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) to avoid calling the Carnival a minivan from the start. The proof? Look at the Carnival’s rugged styling and square jaw. 

But it’s not just the exterior.

New, More Powerful 3.5-Liter V6

The 8-speed auto transmission is mated to a 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder engine. More potent than the previous Sedona, the Carnival 2022 has a respectable 290 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. In various tests, the Carnival reached the 60 mph mark in 7.5 seconds, faster than models like the Pacifica.

EPA has already published fuel economy figures for this engine: 19/26 MPG in city/ highway driving. These figures make the Carnival more fuel efficient than the Sedona, which runs on 18/24 MPG.

Best-In-Class Cargo Room

The seating arrangement for seven or eight passengers is the real innovation. The eight-seater model has a movable center seat in the second row that, when pushed all the way forward, makes it easier for the front passenger to reach objects or watch a child. Plus, the seat can be used as a table.

The second-row bench seat consists of three separate sliding elements that provide more versatility. They are easily removable, however, do need to be stowed somewhere. The third-row seats neatly collapse flat. Upon removal of the 3rd row seats, you get a roomy interior of 40.2 cubic feet and 145.1 cubic feet overall by removing both the 2nd and 3rd row seats. Both of these figures are excellent in their category, providing ample room for your family and cargo space!

Technology Transcending Tradition

Taking a cue from Mercedes, the Carnival has two digital screens combined into what appears to be a giant unit. The driver can easily see a 12.3-inch monitor on the instrument panel, while the infotainment system is controlled by a 12.3-inch screen in the center. 

The Carnival also has plenty of charging ports, cup holders, and connectivity, such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Kia has two 11V power inverters and up to 9 USB ports spread across the seats. You can also see and talk to passengers in the rear via the intercom and rearview camera.

Affordable Pricing

Kia has always been selling cars with excellent value propositions. The Carnival comes at five different trim levels: LX, LX Seat Package, EX, SX, and the SX Prestige. Each higher trim level of the Carnival offers a feature that the competition lacks at that price point. The 2022 Kia Carnival LX is the most basic model starting at $33,275 MRP, followed by the LX Seat Package, which is also the most popular model.
