It may be called Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), but to people in the U.S. it’s called soccer. The most popular competition within FIFA is the World Cup, which takes place only once every four years. Founded in 1904, FIFA now has a membership that reaches 211 national associations. That’s more that the 193 countries counted by the United Nations because some countries have multiple teams representing different areas of the same country. Some teams are not recognized as independent countries but are also members of the football association, such as Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the US. The next World Cup is in 2026, but there are plenty of men’s and women’s tournaments all over the world between now and then.
Kia has been an official partner and sponsor of FIFA since 2007, providing vehicles for events such as the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Confederations Cup, and FIFA Women’s World Cup. Kia also sponsors the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which is held every two years. The 23rd edition of this championship tournament, featuring the age under-20 national teams from around the world, will be held in Indonesia, between May and June 2023. This year, 24 teams will compete against each other. The women’s FIFA U-20 World Cup is being held jointly in Australia and New Zealand, with 32 teams, between July and August 2023.

Russia has been banned since the war in Ukraine. The tournament was held in the very controversial venue of Qatar in the winter of 2022, with many calling it a mistake due to its treatment of women, and migrant workers, human rights issues, and criminalization of homosexuality. Argentina won that year, taking home the top prize of $42 million. The greatest sum ever awarded to a FIFA team.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will share the responsibilities between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico and will include 48 teams, making it an even larger and more inclusive for nations than it has ever been. The women’s FIFA World Cup is scheduled for 2027, and both events are major occasions with the whole world watching.
